After coming to Atlantis, humanity's culture changed. Ruled by an Emperor, their class system reverted more to what it was like pre-Renaissance.
Genders remained equal, but arranged marriage is now a common practice, no matter your class. However, it could be negotiated that one would be in a marriage due to love. The parents would arrange the marriages, although children are allowed to have a say.
Classes are something along these lines:
Royalty
Evenbourne (Magic-users, usually trained by the Academy)
Nobility
Merchants
Craftsmen
Workers
Peasants
There are also several orichalcum mines located around the basin. They would be fairly dangerous to work in, but mostly just hard to get to. Orichalcum mining is an important trade, and workers who are miners are honoured higher than others due to this.
The Academy is slightly removed from the common peoples, being distant from the main sequence of earthmotes. However, students are still allowed to visit the markets, and, to a lesser degree, their parents.
As a note, outside of the Academy the Ninth Petal is referenced mostly in a hushed whisper, and being able to control that type of power has a slight taboo. Inside the Academy, no one really cares as long as you know what you're doing.
The temperature in Atlantis is not nearly as hot as the jungle, due to the fact that it's above four waterfalls and is cooled by the mist and cold winds coming from those as well as its high elevation.
The texture of raw orichalcum is something like this:
