Vin had her magic class after lunch. Not Operation Nevermore, but her required class.
They had been practicing basic magic in one of the training gyms. She had been excused to go and read a book in a corner because she already knew what was going on.
She'd just finished her book when the snarls came. The howls of a pack of nearby Nemisi caused many of the students to look with fear towards the gym entrance.
Instead, Vincentia simply stood up, closing her book happily. It had a good ending.
She was about to ask a question when the intercom screeched and buzzed to life.
"Good afternoon, my students. I hope you're not asleep."
Oh, indeed. Count on the Headmaster to be a cheeky little fellow.
She raised her hand politely. The teacher looked slightly perturbed. "Yes, Vincentia?"
"Am I allowed to bring a friend?"
Her teacher frowned. "I... guess so."
"Thank you."
"Is there any form of protocol for this drill, or is the point simply to defeat the Mistlings?" Her voice had a new air of authority. Although her classmates and teacher knew her to be the Lotus, she rarely actually assumed the attitude of her office.
"The first years have a protocol to follow. Otherwise, once they're all defeated, the drill is over."
Vin nodded. "I'll need to make my way to the Stables, then." She wasn't a good close-quarters fighter anyway, and having her Silent Shadow would help her get around much faster.
How many Mistlings am I going to have to chew through?
She made her way over to the doors, peeking carefully out of them. Many of the Sixth Petal had bellowed battle cries and joined in battle already. Count on them to make good meat shields.
"There appears to be a good concentration of Lashers and Arubi out... goodness." She let out a little noise of slight surprise. "That looks like two dozen Nemisi."
Several of the other students whimpered.
The Sixths turned and stared at their new foes, looking bewildered.
Vin pushed open the door and strode out, standing in front of the Sixth's line.
The Reaper held out her right hand behind her, as if she were grasping the shaft of something.
Green light flared in the air, outlining the shape of a scythe. The outline was filled by a blackness as dark as the void, expanding from her hand like spilled ink. Then, with a flash of black, the form of Stormcrescent filled her hand.
"Nice of you to call."
"No problem."
Bringing her left hand up and letting the sleeve fall down, the Lotus tattoo flared as her scythe's blade was rimmed with electricity. The Nemisi advanced, snarling and howling.
"Well. Don't you get worse by the dozen."
As the canine Mistlings charged, the Sixths behind her sprung forward, meeting them. Stormcrescent whirled and danced as Vin focused on keeping a scythe-length radius of space around her. Mistlings fell before their blades, but they were far from being done with this battle.
Especially since she heard more howls in the distance.
