Five hundred years ago, Earth suffered a collision.
Now that doesn't literally mean another body collided with Earth. It means, instead, that an entirely different dimension collided with Earth.
This dimension was more commonly known as the Eventide, and it was a realm entirely unlike our own. Its creatures spilled over onto the Earth, and humanity almost vanished as the hostile creatures nearly overrun the planet, now known as the Mistlands. Humans were no longer on top.
As animals are wont to do, the remnants of humanity pulled themselves together and sought out safe havens from the new predators that nipped at their heels (to put it nicely). One of these was found in a most unexpected place: deep within the Amazon Jungle.
Four rivers drained into a huge basin in four huge waterfalls. High above the lake, floating amid the cool winds of the waterfalls, were huge floating rocks, accessible only by a single natural rock bridge. Connected to each other by swaying bridges, they were considered a miracle, and humans flocked inside them.
They were home to a spectacular ghost city- empty plazas and streets and buildings, as well as fortifications. A mysterious new metal was found- lightweight but strong and proven to have magical properties. It matched almost exactly the ancient descriptions of Orichalcum.
People settled on this paradise, and it was named Atlantis. Soon, people began to wonder who - or what - caused this paradise to be formed. An expedition was made to climb to the highest and final rock mote, which no one had ever gotten to before due to the fact that its bridge had fallen down. What the explorers found shocked them.
There was a huge plaza, with cobblestones of orichalcum and mother of pearl detailing the form of a nine-petaled lotus. Furthermore, there were nine ancient oriental-style temples, each as ornate as a palace. Entering the only unlocked one- the central and largest- the explorers found a scroll detailing the laws of Atlantis.
Each temple was devoted to a certain star, whose power could be channeled by the humans. One human would be chosen as the Lotus of each star and the head of their temple, determined by their adherence to certain criteria. Normal weapons would not work within Atlantis, but swords and other weapons forged of orichalcum (which could be found in the surrounding basin) would work beautifully. The Imperial Star, ruler of the stars, would chose the first Emperor of reborn Atlantis.
At first many were dubious. But when people started being selected as the Lotuses and the Emperor took his throne, slowly people began to realize that this was created by the stars, and to live here they had to absorb its culture.
About twenty years ago, along came a man known only as the Headmaster. The brother of the Emperor, he decided to create a school to teach people to channel the power of the stars. Using heretofore unattempted magic, he raised an entire new spire, slightly disconnected from the rest, and founded the Academy on its surface.
